In the ancient esoteric orders, the Golden Ceremonial comprised the trials of initiation that led aspirants to their consecration as Guardians of Eternity. This Golden Ceremonial had two parts. The first of them was not carried out on the physical plane because it actually took place in the astral worlds. They were the four trials of matter and corresponded to the four elements understood as fundamental for the constitution of the ordinary world at that moment. They are those elemental principles that maintain, impel, govern, and destroy physical life: passion, as the trial of earth; doubt, as the trial of air; fear, as the trial of water; and separativity, as the trial of fire.
After the first Golden Ceremonial, the aspirant arrived at the doors of the Temple, where the three mental trials that preceded the mystical wedding with divinity took place. Through them, the adepts became intensely aware of the primary calls of their human nature and the constant attention they would need to apply to give to their existence a meaning that transcended themselves. It was about a sense of domination, not as defeating an enemy, but the constant battle of those who intimately and deeply embrace their own vulnerability in the pursuit of union with the divine. These trials led the Wayfarer to be in front of the door of the Temple, where the second part of the Golden Ceremonial comprised the three mental trials.
The first mental trial is that of the Election or the domination of the passion of the flesh. It begins when the Wayfarer knocks on the door of the Temple in which the Divine Mother is hidden in white veils. And She asks what he came to get there. He answers that he seeks no less than Her. Three other women of dazzling beauty, dressed in red, blue, and yellow, are introduced to him. They tempt him for the last time, sinking doubt into his soul. They challenge the Divine Mother to unveil Herself and show Herself as She truly is. The veils fall, and the Divine Mother shows Herself in Her features of pain, destruction, and suffering. Once unveiled, She challenges the Wayfarer to choose between Her and the other three beautiful women. He reiterates his longing and places himself at the feet of the Divine Mother. This is enough for her to regain her youthful face and beauty. And the Wayfarer became the Pilgrim.
Suddenly, the Temple was filled with such dense and obscure shadows that were even unimaginable, and the black stone of the Mother was raised. In the darkness, one can only see the sleeping body of the Mother in her eternal coffin. The Pilgrim is tempted again. Now, for the thirst for domination, the thirst for power. She offered him the exact reckoning, the unlimited pride that is indispensable for triumph, the surest, most secret roads to destroy and make human beings master of the world, all the secret arts that make him master of all things in the world. Once again, the Pilgrim rejects these offers and withdraws his longing for the Divine Mother; The shadows fade away and the interior of the Temple is illuminated again.
The last mental trail is that of the eagerness for riches, the thirst for wealth, not only material but also wealth for knowledge. The Mother will show the Pilgrim all the gold hidden in the entrails of the earth, all the gold of intelligence and wisdom, and will tell him that everything can belong to him without any other sacrifice. And, in this final opportunity, the Pilgrim reinforces his longing for the Divine Mother and overcomes the last mental trial, giving birth to the Liberated, or IHS, which represents the human being substantially united in a mystical union with Divinity. In the sky, already shrouded by the mantle of night, the eternal symbol of the circle and the cross shine, representing the perfect infinity of immolated divinity and the human being, in turn made a god.
